A first-time hunter workshop and dove hunt will occur over a three day period. The workshop will occur at the Roswell Department of Game and Fish Office and the hunt will take place in Artesia. This event is open to individuals 18 and over who have never purchased a hunting license, or have not purchased a hunting license in the last five years. Adults are encouraged to bring a youth to participate with them. The first day will consist of classroom instruction on basic hunting skills and gun safety. The second day, participants will practice shooting clay pigeons at the trap range. The third day will consist of a dove hunt that morning. Shotguns and ammunition will be provided for participants or they may bring their own.

The 18th Annual Dragonfly Festival will be held Sept. 7. The Department of Game and Fish will have a fishing pond, archery range, poach coach and wildlife identification information on site. No fee or registration is required to attend this event. However, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be offering free guided wildlife tours. Reservations are required for these tours. Join the Sandia Mountain Bear Collaborative for this festive event which will feature lectures on living with Bears, and Bear behavior. Children’s events and booths about wildlife from local organizations will be there!
This will be a fishing event for invited media at Fenton Lake to learn basic fishing skills, attend a tour of Seven Springs Fish Hatchery and discuss restoration efforts of the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout and the importance of hunting and fishing in tourism and local economies.
The Department of Game and Fish will be participating in a fund raiser for Sierra Vista Primary Fun Fest where various activities and events will be held. The Department will have an archery range at this event. This event is open to the public and is a fund raiser for the school.
