Hunter Education Cow Elk Hunt @ NRA Whittington Center and Vermejo Park Reserve
Oct 25 – Oct 26 all-day

2pm-6pm; 4:30am-? (Sat. & Sun.)

This hunt is a collaboration of VPR and NMDGF to reward HE graduates from within the year who excel on their HE course. Additionally, one volunteer instructor also is rewarded this hunt opportunity as well for their service and dedication to the NMDGF. The NM Wild Sheep Foundation sponsors the elk tags.

Fishing Monitoring on the Jemez River with Rio Rancho High
Oct 29 all-day

Rio Ranch High students will learn about fisheries monitoring on the Jemez River at the Valles Caldera and further down stream at Hummingbird Music Camp and gain an understanding of the upstream-downstream relationship between water quality and fish health. This event is only open to the students and not open to the public.

Hunter Education Instructor Training Workshop @ Bluewater Lake State Park - Prewitt NM
Nov 9 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm

This workshop is required to become a certified hunter education instructor and will certify you to teach both the Standard and the Field Day Hunter Education student courses. This workshop will also provide the NM Hunter Education certification to new instructors who need a required NM hunter education number.

Create a Customer Identification Account (CIN) with the Department. Fill out a volunteer application at https://new-mexico.volunteers.kalkomey.com/ Once the application is approved, signup through your CIN account.

OHV Safety Class: ATV @ Los Lunas River Park

All students must pre-register prior to class.

Online training is also available that provides the required safety permit after completion (see Safety and Training: Online Training tab).

New Mexico law requires anyone younger than 18 to obtain a safety permit prior to operating an OHV on public lands. The Department offers free hands-on ATV or off-highway motorcycle (OHM) training that provides a safety permit after completion. Students must use a properly registered OHV and all necessary safety equipment. Training machines and safety equipment (helmets, eye protection, boots, and gloves) are available to pre-registered students by reservation.

Off-Highway Motorcycle (OHM) Safety Training @ Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo, New Mexico

The Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Program will provide an off-highway motorcycle safety training. Due to the limitations of access to the air force base, this training is provided only to the public that has official access to the base and is on a first-come first-served basis. Students must be at least six years old. Training machines and safety gear are available. Parents must remain on-site during training. Each student should bring weather appropriate clothing (gloves, boots, long pants and long sleeved shirt), a snack or lunch, water and sunscreen.
