Fishing Skills Training and Fisheries Ecology Sampling

Escalante High students will learn fishing skills and participate in fisheries monitoring at Trout Stalker Ranch and Cooper’s Ranch on the Rio Chama. This event is only open to students from the school and is not open to the public.

Hunter Education Cow Elk Hunt @ NRA Whittington Center and Vermejo Park Reserve

This hunt is a collaboration of VPR and NMDGF to reward HE graduates from within the year who excel on their HE course. Additionally, one volunteer instructor also is rewarded this hunt opportunity as well for their service and dedication to the NMDGF. The NM Wild Sheep Foundation sponsors the elk tags.

Fishing Monitoring on the Jemez River with Rio Rancho High
Oct 29 all-day

Rio Ranch High students will learn about fisheries monitoring on the Jemez River at the Valles Caldera and further down stream at Hummingbird Music Camp and gain an understanding of the upstream-downstream relationship between water quality and fish health. This event is only open to the students and not open to the public.

Fishing Clinic Roswell Girl Scouts

This clinic is sponsored by Roswell area Girl Scouts. The clinic will begin with a lesson on fish biology and will include proper fish handling techniques. This will be followed with a lesson on knots, equipment assembly, hook safety, casting and baits. The scouts and their families will spend the rest of the day fishing at Lake Van. This event is not open to the public.

This will be followed with a lesson on hook safety, knots, equipment assembly. The fishing clinic will be held at Lake Van. The clinic will begin with a review on hook safety and knots followed by casting and baits. The students will practice catch and release; however, two fish will be kept and used for a fish dissection lesson. This event is not open to the public.

Casting Skills (Backyard Bass) @ Aspen Community Magnet School

Mr. Lucas Herrera sponsors a fishing club at Aspen Community School and has invited NMDGF to visit and conduct a casting skills lesson for his club members. There will be 22 youth casting for backyard bass and learning how to cast for accuracy and distance as well as proper technique. This is a closed event and will only include members of the fishing club as well as two staff members.

Las Cruces Classroom Workshop and Fishing Clinic

This event is sponsored by Las Cruces Public Schools. This event for special needs students in the Las Cruces public school system. The first two days are scheduled for the students and caregivers while the third day is for the students and their families. Historically, we have seen over 150 students during the first two days. The teachers have been working with the students since the beginning of the school year on casting, etc., so our goal for this event is to simply get the kids fishing and catch fish. This event is closed to the public.

Fishing Event @ Los Puentes Charter School

Twenty-three high school students from Los Puentes Charter School will be fishing at Tingley Beach. Students have participated in Mr. Cogburn’s Outdoor Education class and have been practicing backyard bass casting skills, knot tying and how to rig a fishing rod. This is a closed event and is not open to the public.

This workshop is required to become a certified hunter education instructor and will certify you to teach both the Standard and the Field Day Hunter Education student courses. This workshop will also provide the NM Hunter Education certification to new instructors who need a required NM hunter education number.

Create a Customer Identification Account (CIN) with the Department. Fill out a volunteer application at https://new-mexico.volunteers.kalkomey.com/ Once the application is approved, signup through your CIN account.

NMDGF Presentations @ Horizon Academy West Charter School

The Department of Game and Fish will be giving four separate presentations to the entire 4th grade student body at Horizon Academy West Charter School. The presentations will include an overview on wildlife-related careers, such as being a Conservation Officer, and also talking about some of the wildlife species found in New Mexico. This event is closed to the public and is only for students at the school.

Albuquerque Fishing Clinic

This event is sponsored by the Albuquerque Girl Scouts. We will begin the clinic learning about the different types of fishing gear followed by hook safety, knots, casting and baits. The scouts will spend the rest of the day fishing with their families. This event is closed to the public.

Off-Highway Vehicle Advisory Board Meeting @ NMDGF

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Advisory Board will meet in public session to hear the following: OHV budget update, general program update, OHV education update, OHV law enforcement update and to establish dates for the next advisory board meeting. The Department’s Off-Highway Vehicle Program has an annual budget funded by revenue generated from the Trail Safety Fund. The OHV Act required the creation of the Trail Safety Fund, which generates revenue from OHV registrations fees. The OHV Advisory Board was established to advise the Department of Game and Fish on matters related to administration of the OHV Act. The board consists of seven members appointed by the governor to two-year terms.

No registration is required; if attending the meeting please arrive before 5:30 P.M.
