The NMDGF will be participating in two consecutive fishing days with Bernalillo, NM Caroll Elementary School. There will be 40 – 45 student participants as well as adult chaperone’s each day.

C.A.S.T. for Kids @ Navajo Lake

C.A.S.T. for Kids events enrich the lives of children with special needs, support their families, and strengthen communities through the sport of fishing. On May 7, a C.A.S.T. for Kids event will take place at Navajo Lake. Community volunteers will be attending to take up to 40 special kids and their parents/guardians fishing and boating on the lake. Fishing will be followed by a picnic lunch for all, and an awards ceremony where each child is honored. All participants receive a free rod and reel, tackle box, event t-shirt, cap, and award plaque. These events are for the 3rd grade students of Carlos Gilbert School. On the first day we will cover hook safety, knots, gear construction and casting. On the second day, working in teams of three we will do fish disection. On May 12 we will be fishing at Monistary Lake.

Bowhunter Skills Camp @ Manzano Mountain State Park
May 14 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

This camp is for participants of any age who is interested in learning more about the basics of archery and bowhunting. Participants will learn archery basics and safety, how to choose equipment, proper shot placement while hunting, outdoor preparedness, and more! All archery equipment will be provided. Participants are responsible for food and drinks.

Registration opens on April 18. Registration forms will be available for download off the following Game & Fish web page, https://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/skills-camps/ and click on the Shooting tab. All participants must have a Department Customer Id Number (CIN) Account and enter this number onto the registration form. Youth under 18 must have a parent or adult present during the camp.

Free Fishing Day 2022

Anglers can fish for free in New Mexico on Saturday, June 4, as the state celebrates National Boating and Fishing Week.

Anyone can fish for free in public fishing waters throughout the state Saturday, June 4, but everyone must observe bag limits and all other rules and regulations. For more information, please visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us.

Maps of public fishing waters, lists of where to find family-friendly fishing and tips on how to fish also can be found on the department website.

Hunter Education Camp @ B.S.A. Camp Tres Ritos
Jun 10 – Jun 12 all-day

This camp is open to youth ages 10 to 17 who are accompanied by a registered adult. Camp is free, meals will be provided and participants will tent-camp on the property. Registration will open May 9 at 9am, and forms will be available at https://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/hunter-education/ under the Hunter Ed Camps tab. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Participants will learn safe and responsible firearms handling, ethical hunting behaviors, conservation, wildlife identification and basic survival skills. Additionally, participants will learn from department conservation officers about their jobs including wildlife investigations, decoy operations, working with wildlife and test their marksmanship skills with bow and arrows. All equipment will be provided. All COVID protocols and health orders that may be in place at the time of the camp will be followed and enforced.

To qualify for the camp, participants must have a Customer Identification Number account with the department and complete the required homework before attending.

Wild Turkey Presentation @ Shady Lakes
