Free Fishing Day 2019

Anglers can fish for free in New Mexico on Saturday, June 1, as the state celebrates National Boating and Fishing Week.

Anyone can fish for free in public fishing waters throughout the state Saturday, June 1, but everyone must observe bag limits and all other rules and regulations. For more information, please visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us.

For information about where to fish and what to use, consult the department’s weekly fishing and stocking report. Maps of public fishing waters, lists of where to find family-friendly fishing and tips on how to fish also can be found on the department website.

Come to the Gallinas Riverfest in Las Vegas Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Department staff will join Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance, Trout Unlimited, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and community partners to help you learn how to cast, tie knots, identify the best fishing holes and how to care for a fly rod. This will be a fishing event for invited media at Fenton Lake to learn basic fishing skills, attend a tour of Seven Springs Fish Hatchery and discuss restoration efforts of the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout and the importance of hunting and fishing in tourism and local economies.

This will be followed with a lesson on hook safety, knots and equipment assembly. The fishing clinic will be held at Elephant Butte Lake. At the lake, we’ll begin with a review on hook safety and knots followed by casting and baits. We will practice catch and release; however, two fish will be kept and used for a fish dissection lesson that is normally conducted sometime after lunch. This is event is closed to the public and only for the participating school.

Girl Scouts Fishing Clinic @ Hobbs

This clinic is sponsored by the Hobbs area Girl Scouts. The clinic will begin with a lesson on fish biology to include proper fish handling techniques. This will be followed with a lesson on knots, equipment assembly, hook safety, casting and baits. The scouts and their families will spend the rest of the day fishing. This event is closed to the public and only for the participating group.

Mr. Lucas Herrera sponsors a fishing club at Aspen Community School and has invited NMDGF to visit and conduct a casting skills lesson for Ms. Julie Nguyen’s 5th grade class. There will be 22 youth casting for backyard bas and learning how to cast for accuracy and distance as well as proper technique.

 This is a closed event to the public and will include members of the fishing club as well as two staff members.
