New Mexico Hunter Education Requirements

No
one under 18 years of age may hunt with a firearm without
first possessing a certificate proving that he/she has passed
this, or another state’s hunter education course. Uncertified
juveniles may shoot (not hunt with) firearms
if under adult supervision or in a supervised program. It
is also illegal for anyone under 18 to apply for, or buy,
any type of firearms hunting license before passing a hunter
education course. Young hunters must have their card
in their possession while hunting. Bowhunter education is not mandatory for archery hunts, but is highly recommended.

Bowhunter Education
This course teaches the fundamentals of safe and responsible archery hunting. Bowhunter Education certification is not required to hunt during archery seasons in New Mexico; however it is required in several surrounding states. Information on states with mandatory bowhunter education requirements can be found at the IHEA’s Bowhunter Education Standards webpage. The New Mexico Bowhunter Education Certification is accepted in all states and Canadian Provinces. This course is hands-on and students are not required to have their own equipment.
First Step - Students MUST complete the homework portion of the course prior to attending a Field Day. Students have the option of completing their homework online or by obtaining a hard copy of the Bowhunter Student Manual. Instructions on how to obtain a hard copy manual is available in the Course Description area when a student is registering for a bowhunter field day through their New Mexico Online License System account.
Field Days are the second step a student will need to complete prior to obtaining their bowhunter education number. This instructor-led portion incorporates classroom lecture and emphasizes hands-on learning. Students are evaluated through a written exam and a field test. Field Days are approximately 8 -12 hours. An adult is required to attend the course with students 10 years
of age and younger. Bowhunter Education field days are listed in the course list below.
Click the following link if you wish to start the homework online: Online Bowhunter Education Manual. It is necessary to have access to a computer, printer (for completion certificate) and adequate internet access to complete the online bowhunter manual option.
