There are 2 special Big Game Enhancement Packages available for the 2017-2018 New Mexico hunting season. The big game enhancement package consists of one license each for deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, oryx and Persian ibex. All hunts are for any legal sporting arm (specific weapons restrictions in certain areas still apply). Licenses will be valid on all public lands where hunting is allowed, and private land with written permission. For oryx, winning bidders must contact New Mexico Game & Fish two weeks in advance of the proposed hunt start date to schedule access to WSMR, and must be accompanied by a badged department employee or WSMR escort when on WSMR lands. The bag limits are one fork-antlered deer, one mature bull elk, one oryx of either sex, one ibex of either sex, and one mature buck. The season dates are September 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018 for deer and elk, April 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018 for ibex and oryx, and August 1 through November 1, 2017 for pronghorn.

Package #1 was auctioned at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Banquet, January 28th, 2017 in Tucson, Arizona.

There are 2 special Lt. Governor’s deer enhancement hunting licenses available for the 2017-2018 New Mexico hunting season. The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is assisting the Department of Game and Fish with the auction and raffle of these authorizations. The licenses are valid from Sept. 1, 2017 through Jan. 31, 2018 with any legal sporting arm. Proceeds from the auction and raffle will be used for deer habitat enhancement and management in New Mexico. The permits will be valid statewide on public land where hunting is allowed (including Department owned WMAs), and private land with written landowner permission. Authorizations may be used either by the recipient or any individual of the recipient’s choice through sale, barter or gift. The bag limit for these hunts is one buck deer.

There are 2 special elk enhancement hunting licenses available for the 2017-2018 New Mexico hunting season. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is assisting the Department of Game and Fish with an auction and raffle of these authorizations for bull elk licenses. Proceeds from the auction and raffle are used for elk habitat restoration and management in New Mexico. The licenses are authorized for use from September 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018 with any legal sporting arm. Authorizations to obtain licenses may be used either by the recipient or any individual of the recipient’s choice through sale, barter or gift. The bag limit for these hunts is one bull elk, and they do not count as once-in-a-lifetime hunts.

Bighorn Sheep Enhancement Licenses

There are 4 special bighorn enhancement hunting licenses available for the 2017-2018 New Mexico hunting season. The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) assists the Department with the auction of two bighorn sheep licenses and the New Mexico Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation (NMWSF) assists the Department with a raffle of two bighorn sheep licenses. Proceeds from these auctions and raffles are used for bighorn sheep research, management, and propagation in New Mexico. Authorizations may be used either by the recipient or any individual of the recipient’s choice through sale, barter or gift. The bag limit for these hunts is any one ram, and they do not count as once-in-a-lifetime hunts.

By Auction: 2 license authorizations were auctioned during the WSF‘s National Convention in Reno, NV, January 2017, one to hunt Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and one to hunt desert bighorn sheep. For more information, please visit: www.wildsheepfoundation.org.

By Raffle:  2 additional license authorizations will be awarded through a raffle held by the New Mexico chapter of WSF; one for a Rocky Mountain bighorn and one for a desert bighorn. The raffle winners choose one of the remaining hunts not chosen by the auction winner. Gould’s Turkey Enhancement Permits

There will be 2 special Gould’s turkey enhancement hunting opportunities available for the 2017-2018 New Mexico hunting season. Authorizations may be used either by the recipient or any individual of the recipient’s choice through sale, barter or gift. Winners of these Enhancement Permits will be provided not only the Gould’s turkey authorization but also a regular New Mexico Spring Turkey license. Therefore winning hunters will have the opportunity to harvest 3 bearded turkeys during the spring season (only 1 Gould’s) including Merriam’s and Rio Grande subspecies.

By Auction: the National Wild Turkey Federation will assist the Department of Game and Fish by auctioning 1 authorization for a Gould’s turkey license at the NWTF Convention and Sport Show February 16-19, 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. By Raffle: The New Mexico National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will assist the Department of Game and Fish with raffling an authorization for a Gould’s turkey license, please e-mail nmturkeyhunt@bajabb.com for more information. The winner will be drawn on Saturday, March 11, 2017. There will only be 300 tickets sold this year and they will be $20 each. Send a check made out to “NM NWTF” to Scott P. Lerich, NM-NWTF, P. O.
