PECOS CANYON CAMPGROUNDS REMAIN OPEN WITH STRICT FIRE RESTRICTIONS

SANTA FE – The Department of Game and Fish imposed strict fire restrictions on State Game Commission properties in Pecos Canyon beginning Friday, June 24, banning all fires but allowing camping and fishing.

The Bert Clancy, Terrero, Jamie Koch and Mora camping and fishing areas will remain open with the following restrictions:

  • No campfires.
  • No open flames.
  • No charcoal grills.
  • No gas grills.
  • No gas lanterns.
  • No chainsaws.
  • No off-highway vehicles.
  • No smoking, except in a vehicle with an ashtray or on a paved surface.
  • No fireworks.
  • No access from Commission properties to U.S. Forest Service land will be allowed.

Fishing will be allowed on the Pecos River, but only on Commission-owned property.

The U.S. Forest Service also imposed strict restrictions for the Santa Fe National Forest on Friday that left developed campgrounds open but made most of the forest off-limits to fishing, hiking and other activities.
