Open Gate Property 153 (Greenwood Area, Ute Park, NM)

Open Gate is a program that leases private lands to improve public access for hunting, fishing, and trapping. Open Gate leases are funded exclusively by hunters, anglers, and trappers through the purchase of the Habitat Management & Access Validation: HMAV.

Directions: Restricted access from the adjacent Valle Vidal and Elliot S. Barker Wildlife Management Area.

Information: The Greenwood Area is a privately owned 11,790 acre property adjacent to the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest. This property contains mixed-conifer forests, montane meadows, and riparian areas. The owner, Vermejo Park Ranch, has graciously allowed the Department to lease the Greenwood Area for hunting and fishing access for ten years at no cost. The Department would like to thank Vermejo Park Ranch for this successful partnership and the benefit it provides to New Mexico’s hunters and anglers.

Permitted Activities: Permitted activities in effect for the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest (http://www.fs.usda.gov/carson) are extended to the Greenwood Area. Therefore, hunting, fishing, and recreational activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and camping are allowed on this area. Hunting and fishing is only permitted on this property during the seasons and dates specified in the Open Gate lease agreement between the Department of Game and Fish and the landowner:

Fishing Open annually July 1 – December 31 See property rules for special use restrictions.

All waters within the Greenwood Area are special trout waters.

Property Rules: The following rules will be posted on this property and enforced at the discretion of the Department of Game and Fish.

  • Use of this Open Gate Property for hunting and fishing is restricted to properly licensed sportspersons and license-exempt persons for the following activities: turkey hunting, elk hunting, bear hunting, and fishing.
  • All rules and access in effect for the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest (http://www.fs.usda.gov/carson) are extended to the Greenwood Area. Therefore, recreational activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and camping are allowed on this area.
  • The Greenwood Area is closed to all access for elk wintering between January 1 and March 31 annually.
  • All roads are closed within the Greenwood area. No motor vehicle travel off designated roads or on closed roads. Walk-in access only.
  • No destructive acts, including: vandalism, graffiti, theft, removal or defacing natural features, resources or signs.
  • No littering

Special Fishing Rules: Special trout water regulations are in effect

  • Artificial fly or lure with single barbless hook.
  • Catch and release only. All trout must be immediately returned to the water where taken.
  • Fishing allowed only during daylight hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset
