Gila Trout Angling

Gila Trout Fishing Report

UPDATED 4/16/14

Changes to regulations:

  • Iron Creek above the fish barrier is closed to angling effective April 1, 2014.

Wild Gila trout populations (free permit required):

  • Mogollon Creek: Surveys conducted upstream of the area open to fishing in spring 2013 indicate a good Gila trout population remains in Mogollon Creek. Mogollon Creek currently presents the only angling opportunity for wild Gila trout.
  • Black Canyon: Trout populations were severely impacted by the 2013 Silver Fire and subsequent flooding. Over 3,000 Gila trout (6”) were stocked throughout Black Canyon (above Black Canyon Campground) in October and December 2013.

Stocked Gila trout populations (permit not required):

  • Sapillo Creek:  Stocked with 1,000 Gila trout (5”) on 10/28/13.
  • Willow Creek: Trout populations were eliminated by the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire and subsequent flooding. Over 3,000 Gila trout were stocked in November 2013.
  • Gila River Forks Area:  Stocked with 200 Gila trout (15”) on 11/5/13.
  • Lake Roberts:  The lake is currently drawn down for dam re-construction which has likely affected angling opportunities.
West Fork Gila River between Pine Flats and Ring Canyon: Stocked with 4,000 Gila trout (5”) on 11/5/13.
