What’s New in 2011-2012

 

Full Fee At Application Deadline

Applicants will be charged an application fee at the time they submit their application. The full license fee will be charge during the week immediately following the application deadline. Please ensure the funds are available on your credit/debit card immediately following the application deadline. If the Department is unable to charge your credit/debit card, your application will not be successful. Your application fee will not be refunded.

 

Application Deadlines

Feb. 2 is the deadline to apply for oryx draw licenses, oryx population management hunts, bear WMA permits and turkey draw permits. Online applications must be made BEFORE 5 p.m. MST.

 

March 28 is the deadline to apply for public deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, ibex, Barbary sheep, javelina, bighorn sheep draw licenses and all population management hunts except oryx. Online applications must be made BEFORE 5 p.m. MDT.

 

Reduced Application Fees

Application fees have been reduced to $8 for residents and $20 for nonresidents.

 

Furbearer Hunter and Trapper Reporting

Furbearer hunters and trappers MUST report their hunting and trapping results by April 7. Additionally, ALL furbearer hunters and trappers, both resident and nonresident, MUST purchase their trapper license from a Department office, online at www.wildlife.state.nm.us or via Form 3. Trapper licenses will NOT be available from other license vendors. Those who do not report, cannot purchase a trapper license for the following season until they report and pay an $8 late fee.

 

Revised Unit 6A/6C Boundary

The northern boundary has moved back to the previous boundary.

 

New Units 51A and 51B

Unit 51 has been split into two units for the purpose of deer management.

 

No Antelope Management Units

All Antelope Management Units (AMUs) have been replaced with Game Management Units (GMUs).

 

Bighorn Ewe Hunts Established

Hunts for bighorn ewes (females) will be held in the Latir herd.

 

Crossbow Use Allowed

Crossbows and bolts may now be used in “Any Legal Sporting Arm” or “Muzzleloader” hunts unless otherwise restricted.

 

Mandatory Cougar ID Course

A cougar license is only valid with a Cougar Identification Course Number. This number will be issued upon successful completion of a mandatory Cougar ID course offered on the Department’s website.

 

New Legal Shooting Hours

Legal shooting hours are from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset for all big game and turkey unless otherwise prohibited.

 

Population Management Hunts Now A 5th Choice

Hunters interested in being placed on a statewide list to be considered for a Population Management Hunt must do so by checking the 5th choice option on paper or electronic Form 2011. See page 18 for more information.

 

Customer ID Number

All applicants for draw hunts or hunter/bowhunter education classes first must obtain their unique Customer Identification Number. It’s available online on the Department’s website or at any Department office.
