New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Aquatic Education program staff will be fishing with 40 elementary school kids from Dolores Gonzales Elementary School at Tingley Beach. Department staff will review knot tying, setting up a fishing rig and casting procedures and how to put a rig together. Participants will then set up their own rigs to fish.

Hunter Education @ Harding County Community Building

This course is open to students of any age seeking hunter education certification to meet hunting requirements in New Mexico. This course is an instructor-led student course that incorporates lecture, video, break-out sessions,  review methods and homework to educate students. Students 10 and under must have a parent/adult present with them during class. All students MUST complete the Today’s Hunter student manual homework before participating in class. Students can pick up a free hard copy manual from Mr. Edward Fluhman at the Roy Municiple School Office. The manual can also be downloaded for free at, www.hunter-ed.com/newmexico/manual/. Students are required to turn in their completed manual worksheets upon arrival to class.

Ladies Fly Fishing 101 Class @ NMDGF Santa Fe Office

This clinic is open to women of all ages living in northern New Mexico interested in learning the basics of fly fishing. Participants will learn the basic knowledge and skills needed to get them started on the water. Students will learn about the equipment used for fly fishing, how to set up a fly rod and reel with leader, tippet and fly during Part I of the class. The class will cover the different types of flies used for trout fishing, what they represent, knots to attach them, and some strategies and tactics to know when and how to fish them effectively. Part II will cover the basics of fly casting on the water, covering the two most important casts, overhead and roll.

This class will be offered by volunteers from the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Ladies Fly Fishing 101 Clinic @ NW Area Game & Fish Office

This class is open to women who are interested in learning the basics of fly fishing. This session will focus on  fly fishing equipment selection, knot tying, selecting lures/flies, reading the water for best catching results, skills to hook, land and release a fish, what you need before you go, and much more! This is a BYOL (bring your own lunch event).

This class is being offered by volunteers from the Bosque Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and no equipment is required.

Rio Rancho Children’s Water Festival @ Rio Rancho Special Events Center

The NMDGF Aquatic Education program will be participating in the annual Rio Rancho Children’s Water Festival.  Aquatic Education staff will be running the casting skills station for up to 25 fifth grade students at a time. The casting skills station will be one of four activity stations at the festival, and students will rotate and participate in all four stations.

Cold-water Fishing for Beginners. @ NM Department of Game and Fish Office

Class offered for adults who have never fished.  Participants will learn fish identification, techniques, equipment and gear, knot tying, casting, and rules and regulations for cold-water fish.  Non-mandatory but they can purchase (or bring) the following: spinning rod and spinning reel or spin casting rod and reel, 8-pound monofilament line, and a fishing license.

Fishing in the Schools Presentation – (APS) Albuquerque Public Schools PE Teacher In-Service @ Highland High School

The Aquatic Education team will conduct a presentation on how to teach fishing in a PE program. We will be conducting two in-service sessions (9:30-10:15 a.m. and 1:05-1:50 p.m.)  – one for elementary PE teachers, and one for secondary PE teachers. The sessions will focus on how the teachers can bring a fishing curriculum into their PE programs and what resources are available to them.

ATV safety class @ Doña Ana County Fairgrounds racetrack

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Program presents an ATV safety class at the old racetrack at the Doña Ana County Fairgrounds, site of the Southern New Mexico State Fair.

Students completing the class receive the safety permit required for off-highway vehicle operators under the age of 18 years on public lands. Students under the age of 18 will also receive a free helmet and goggles.

ATVs and safety gear will be available for use during the class.

Registration Details:

Students must be at least 6 years of age. Space is limited – all students must already have or must create a free account with the Department of Game and Fish (https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/), and register prior to the class to ensure that each student will have an age- and size-appropriate training ATV available.
