Class offered for adults who have never fished. Participants will learn fish identification, techniques, equipment and gear, knot tying, casting, and rules and regulations for cold-water fish. Non-mandatory but they can purchase (or bring) the following: spinning rod and spinning reel or spin casting rod and reel, 8-pound monofilament line, and a fishing license.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Off-Highway Vehicle Program presents an ATV safety class at the old racetrack at the Doña Ana County Fairgrounds, site of the Southern New Mexico State Fair.
Students completing the class receive the safety permit required for off-highway vehicle operators under the age of 18 years on public lands. Students under the age of 18 will also receive a free helmet and goggles.
ATVs and safety gear will be available for use during the class.

We will go over and practice the essential skills necessary to fly fish. The topics covered will include casting, insects, rigs, equipment, knots and reading water.

Class was requested by BIA for their LEOs and is one of three blocks being put on. This class is rescheduled from the class canceled on Nov. 20, 2023, due to inclement weather.

The Department sponsors several activities at this annual event, including a catch-and-release fish pond for kids that gives them an opportunity to win prizes from the many vendors participating. Several calling contests are also taking place, including turkey and elk. Conservation officers will be on hand with the Poach Coach to answer questions, as will several biologists and other Department employees. The event is free to those who have a valid hunting or fishing license. Entry fee is $3 for all others.
