Grant County Outdoor Show @ Bear Canyon Lake

Event provided by NMDGF conservation officers in the Silver City District to introduce various outdoor activities to the public. Pellet gun basic shooting skills, basic archery skills, OHV simulator (stationary ATV used to teach folks how to ride an ATV safely), poach coach with big game cases from the past, how to live with critters and education on depredation issues, wildlife rehabilitation with live animals and education, learning how to cast with prizes given for accurate casts, USFS-fire prevention. Also, channel catfish will be stocked so bring your fishing tackle and fishing licenses. In addition, snacks and cold drinks will be sold by a local food truck.

Hunter Education Camp (Queen) @ Guadalupe Christian Camp

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is hosting a Hunter Education Camp in beautiful Queen, New Mexico at the Guadalupe Christian Camp south of Carlsbad. Registration for this unique hunter education course opens on April 3 to youth 10 years of age and older who have not yet passed hunter education. Youth must have an adult register and participate in the camp with them.

Participants will have the chance to earn their hunter education certification while at camp and also shoot .22 rifles and archery! This hunter education opportunity includes lodging in gender-specific dorms and all course equipment, participants simply pay $50.00/camper to the host facility for their meals Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast.

 

To qualify for the camp, participants must have a Customer Identification Number account with the department and complete the required homework before attending.

Hunter Education – Field Day with Live Fire @ Del Norte Gun Club

A Field Day course is an accelerated instructor-led hunter education course and is for students 10 years of age and older. Students under 11 must have a parent/adult present with them during class. This course incorporates less lecture and review and adds more hands-on components and a live fire component. All students MUST complete the Today’s Hunter student manual homework before class. Students can pick up a free hard copy manual at Albuquerque Game and Fish Office, 7816 Alamo Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120, or the manual can be downloaded for free at anytime from, hunter-ed.com/newmexico/manual/. Students are required to turn in their completed manual worksheets and a signed parent authorization to participate in the live fire portion upon arrival to class.

Bowhunter Education Instructor Workshop @ NM Department of Game and Fish Northwest Area Office

This workshop is required to become a certified bow hunter education instructor and will certify you to teach both the

Traditional and the Field Day Bowhunter Education student courses. This workshop will familiarize you with

equipment, methods and field activities used during class, lesson plans, and policies and procedures of the bow

hunter program. This workshop will also provide the New Mexico Bowhunter Education certification to new instructors who need a required New Mexico bowhunter education number.

Registration Details:

Interested applicants need to first become certified NMDGF volunteers. Below are the steps to become a certified volunteer:

Rio Costilla Cutthroat Trout Celebration @ Rio Costilla Comanche Creek and Shuree Ponds

The Department and our partners have completed the final stages of an over 40-year project restoring Rio Grande cutthroat trout, our state fish, to approximately 120 miles of stream, 10 lakes, and one reservoir near Costilla, New Mexico. This project ensures the long-term persistence of New Mexico’s state fish on the landscape in the face of our changing climate and will provide exceptional outdoor recreation for New Mexico anglers and tourism opportunities now and into the future.

On Saturday, July 1, 2023, we will be teaming up with our partners at the U.S. Forest Service, various non-profit organizations and area private landowners to host a “grand reveal” event to officially welcome the public to their improved recreation area. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring speeches from project partners and elected officials to welcome attendees and media to the event and to share information about the project and its benefits.

Following this introduction, the Department will be stocking additional catchable-size Rio Grande cutthroat trout along the Rio Costilla and Comanche Creek to boost fishing opportunity for this event and the Fourth of July weekend. The partners will simultaneously host a youth and family angler-education expo at the adjacent Shuree Ponds. The expo will include youth angler education with live fishing, informational booths and exhibits running until 5 p.m.
