Classroom Presentations and Fishing Clinic @ Southwest Prep / Tingley Beach

These presentations will focus on fish biology, fishing safety, fishing knots, rules and regulations, equipment preparation, casting and fishing opportunities within New Mexico. The students will assemble their gear and go fishing at the lake. We normally practice catch and release; however, a few fish will be kept for dissection purposes. EVENT CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC.

Ribbon Cutting: Clovis Wing-Shooting Complex and Archery Range @ Ned Houk Park

The City of Clovis, in cooperation with NMDGF, is excited to announce the opening of the Clovis Wing-Shooting Complex and Archery Range at Ned Houk Park, located at 726 C R 17. This newly constructed multi-faceted facility includes four trap/skeet overlay fields, a 12-station sporting clays course, indoor and outdoor archery ranges, an indoor airgun range, and a multipurpose building for hunter education and other activities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be open to the public on Oct. 25, 2022, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Wildlife Presentations at Mt. Taylor Elementary @ Grants, NM

NMDGF will be giving wildlife presentations to students at Mt. Taylor Elementary. EVENT CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC.

Hunter Education Course @ Clovis Wing-Shooting Complex and Archery Range

This course is open to students of any age seeking hunter education certification to meet hunting requirements in New Mexico. This course is an instructor-led, student course that incorporates lecture, video, break-out sessions, review methods and homework to educate students. Students 10 and under must have a parent/adult present with them during class. All students MUST complete the Today’s Hunter student manual homework before participating in class. Students can pick up a free hard copy manual by contacting Rick Andes at 575-799-7285. The manual can also be downloaded for free at, Students are required to turn in their completed manual worksheets upon arrival to class.

Registration opens on Oct. 17 and is conducted online through the students Customer Id Number (CIN) Account. Once in the account, click on Hunter Education then click the Register for Hunter Ed Classes button and follow the prompts.

Nature Niños Intro to the Outdoors @ Shady Lakes

Nature Niños is excited to plan a big community event at Shady Lakes this fall. Sat., Oct. 29 has been reserved as an “Intro to the Outdoors” community event at Shady Lakes. This event will be hosted from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Light snacks and drinks will be provided, but families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while out on the property. The hunter education pellet trailer will be available for families to learn about safe, ethical and responsible firearms handling and how to enroll in a hunter education course.

Shady Lakes Community Day, Introduction to the Outdoors. @ Shady Lakes, Bernalillo, New Mexico.

The NMDGF Aquatic Education program will be working the fishing station at Shady Lakes Community Day, sponsored by Nature Ninos, at There will be eight stations in all, including: fishing, bee keeping, shelter building skills, wildlife calling (turkey, elk etc.), plant and wildlife identification, and more.

Event open to the public with registration. There is a cap due to parking.

Las Cruces Public Schools Alumni Pond Fishing Event @ Alumni Pond
Nov 1 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Las Cruces Public Schools, in cooperation with the Las Cruces Police Department, is having their annual Fall Fishing Days for children with disabilities on Nov. 1-4, 2022. An estimated 225 elementary, middle, and high school age special needs students from around the school district will be participating over four days of fishing with sponsorship from the NMSU Bass Club.
