#FishNM21 – Plan your NM fishing trip

If you have tracked the weekly Fishing Report, you would notice that there have been A LOT of great catches all across New Mexico this year. Whether you have been out fishing this year, or planning your first fishing trip, this series will help you get started.

August 18 – Where to start? Reading and understanding the Fishing Rules and Information Booklet, using the Fishing Planner and a special early look into new tools the Department will be releasing soon to help you plan your trip! Register for the Webinar.

August 24 – NM Trout and Bass Challenges. New Mexico Bass and Trout Challenges are in full swing! During this session we will cover those challenges and talk about where and how to fish for those species. Register for the Webinar. 

August 30 – New Mexico’s native trout – Join us to talk about conservation, management, habitat restoration and fishing for New Mexico’s native trout species. Register for the Webinar. 

September 7 – All about raising fish in New Mexico! During this session, we will be talking about the State-owned fish hatcheries. Have you ever wondered how they are managed for restoration and sport? Join us for more and let us know what questions you have. Register for the Webinar.

OHV First Responder Training @ New Mexico State Police Academy, Santa Fe, New Mexico

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish was asked to provide certified Off-Highway Vehicle Act training to first responders at the New Mexico State Police Academy. This event is free but not open to the public. The training will be held at the Department of Public Safety State Police Academy in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

National Hunting & Fishing Day 2021

Anglers can fish for free in New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 25, as the state celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Anyone can fish for free in public fishing waters throughout the state Saturday, Sept. 25, but everyone must observe bag limits and all other rules and regulations. For more information, please visit

STEM Presentation

Advanced ATV Law Enforcement Training @ Lea County Sheriff's Department, Lovington, New Mexico

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish was asked to provide certified advanced ATV law enforcement training to first responders of the Lea County Sheriff’s Department. This event is free but not open to the public. The training will be held in Lovington, New Mexico at a closed-to-the-public outdoor training facility.

Off-Highway Vehicle; All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Training @ City of Albuquerque Shooting Range, New Mexico
Nov 9 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will offer an all terrain vehicle (ATV) safety training to the Todd Nims’ Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) class. This is a free training and is closed to the public. The training will be held at the City of Albuquerque Shooting Range; training machines and safety gear are available, no sharing. Each student must bring weather appropriate clothing (gloves, boots, long pants and long sleeved shirt), a snack or lunch, water and sunscreen.

Students of any age must have a customer identification number with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. All students must preregister to reserve a place in the class. To preregister or to get more information please visit or call Christopher Johnson.

Alumni Pond Youth Fishing Event @ Alumni Pond, Las Cruces, NM
Nov 18 @ 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

Join the New Mexico Department and Game and Fish and New Mexico Outdoor Adventures as we present a free youth fishing day that includes free instruction, free food and a take-home rod and reel to continue fishing in the future with the skills you learned.

Registration is required and open to the first 15 enrollees. To register, contact Jason Amaro for event enrollment forms and more information. Event is open to youth 5-17 who are new to fishing. A fishing license is required. A parent or guardian must accompany the youth participant for the entire day. A COVID waiver must be signed, and all current CDC guidelines will be followed by both participants and instructors.
