Ft. Wingate – The Department of Game and Fish is looking for information that would assist in solving a case in which a female (cow) elk was killed and left to rot in Game Management Unit 10.

The cow elk was shot off Forest Road 402 in the Page Flat area. The carcass was approximately 60 yards off the road. The investigation reveals that the cow elk was unlawfully shot between March 5th or 6th, 2016. Officers were able to retrieve a bullet from the carcass for evidence.

Officers later received information that in the afternoon of Saturday March 5th, a red Jeep with the top down was riding around in the area of Forest Road 402 and Country Road 50. It was reported that multiple shots were heard during this time and the occupants were shooting shotguns from the back of the jeep. Officers were able to collect more evidence and found 15 to 20 shotgun shells along the roads.

It is not clear if the occupants of the red Jeep were involved in the unlawful killing of the cow elk but officers would like to talk to them to gather more information about the events of this past weekend.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact Corporal Usrey at 505-795-1935 or file a report anonymously 24/7 online or call Operation Game Thief 1-800 432-4263.

The Department offers cash rewards for information that lead to charges being filed. Callers remain anonymous and could receive $750 cash.
