HOBBS – The New Mexico State Game Commission will hold a meeting at 9 a.m., Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Lea County Event Center, 5101 N. Lovington Hwy., Hobbs, New Mexico 88240. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Aquatic Education program will be working with Santa Fe Home School Community by conducting an Aquatic Insect lab and fishing with group participants ranging in age from 7-17 years of age. This event is closed to the public.

Department staff will be teaching a fishing lesson to three different elementary school classes that are participating in the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program. The students will be learning how to assemble rods, tie knots, bait hooks, cast safely and catch, land and release fish. This event is closed to the public.
The Department will be assisting the New Mexico YHEC 501c3 with putting on this year’s youth hunter education challenge.
New Mexico Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is held once a year for kids ages 7-18 to help improve their hunting, marksmanship and safety skills.
Through simulated hunting situations, live fire competitions, and responsible hunting events, YHEC helps build upon skills learned in basic hunter education courses and encourages safer, lifelong hunting habits.
From rifle, bow and muzzleloader shooting at life-sized targets, to wildlife identification, map and compass orienteering and more, YHEC participants get hands-on training in eight skill areas, giving them expertise in all hunting practices.
