Casting Skills (Backyard Bass) @ Aspen Community Magnet School
Nov 13 – Nov 17 all-day

Mr. Lucas Herrera sponsors a fishing club at Aspen Community School and has invited NMDGF to visit and conduct a casting skills lesson for his club members. There will be 22 youth casting for backyard bass and learning how to cast for accuracy and distance as well as proper technique. This is a closed event and will only include members of the fishing club as well as two staff members.

Fishing Event @ Los Puentes Charter School
Nov 15 – Nov 19 all-day

Twenty-three high school students from Los Puentes Charter School will be fishing at Tingley Beach. Students have participated in Mr. Cogburn’s Outdoor Education class and have been practicing backyard bass casting skills, knot tying and how to rig a fishing rod. This is a closed event and is not open to the public.

Rio Rancho Public Schools Fishing Workshop and Clinic
Nov 18 – Nov 22 all-day

This event is sponsored by Rio Rancho Public Schools. Classroom workshops will be conducted on Monday and Wednesday with fishing clinics on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The classroom workshops will begin with a game called “Who’s responsible for the fish?”. This will be followed with a lesson on hook safety, knots and equipment assembly. The fishing clinic will be held at Tingley Beach. The clinic will begin with a review on hook safety and knots followed by casting and baits. Students will practice catch and release; however, two fish will be kept and used for a fish dissection lesson. This event is closed to the public.

Hunter Education Instructor Training Workshop @ Bluewater Lake State Park - Prewitt NM

This workshop is required to become a certified hunter education instructor and will certify you to teach both the Standard and the Field Day Hunter Education student courses. This workshop will also provide the NM Hunter Education certification to new instructors who need a required NM hunter education number.

Create a Customer Identification Account (CIN) with the Department. Fill out a volunteer application at https://new-mexico.volunteers.kalkomey.com/ Once the application is approved, signup through your CIN account.

NMDGF Presentations @ Horizon Academy West Charter School
Nov 20 – Nov 24 all-day

The Department of Game and Fish will be giving four separate presentations to the entire 4th grade student body at Horizon Academy West Charter School. The presentations will include an overview on wildlife-related careers, such as being a Conservation Officer, and also talking about some of the wildlife species found in New Mexico. This event is closed to the public and is only for students at the school.

Albuquerque Fishing Clinic

This event is sponsored by the Albuquerque Girl Scouts. We will begin the clinic learning about the different types of fishing gear followed by hook safety, knots, casting and baits. The scouts will spend the rest of the day fishing with their families. This event is closed to the public.

OHV Safety Class: ATV @ ABQ Shooting Range Park

Online training is also available that provides the required safety permit after completion (see Safety and Training: Online Training tab).

New Mexico law requires anyone younger than 18 to obtain a safety permit prior to operating an OHV on public lands. The Department offers free hands-on ATV or off-highway motorcycle (OHM) training that provides a safety permit after completion. Students must use a properly registered OHV and all necessary safety equipment. Training machines and safety equipment (helmets, eye protection, boots, and gloves) are available to pre-registered students by reservation.
